This collection contains some of the best stories by American writer Mark Twain, revealing the full range of his talent: from satire and irony to philosophy and keen observation. Mark Twain conceived "The Mysterious Stranger" in three different versions, none of which he completed; this collection contains the very first edition. The story takes place in the small village of Eseldorf, hidden in the Austrian mountains. Three young friends meet a stranger named Philip Traum. He enchants the boys with magical feats, such as creating people the size of a finger, reading their thoughts, and changing their destinies. During a long conversation, it is revealed that Philip is an angel, and even the nephew of the devil himself. This mystical character questions the nature of good and evil, revealing the imperfections of the world and criticizing religious dogmas and human prejudices.

The book also contains both witty and funny, as well as heartfelt stories that show social contrasts, human weaknesses and oddities in Twain's characteristic style.
