Fergus Hume (Ferguson Wright Hume, 1859–1932) was one of the pioneers of the detective genre. His most famous book, "The Mystery of a Black Cab," inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novel, "A Study in Scarlet." Born in England, he studied law in New Zealand, then moved to Australia, traveled extensively, and wrote approximately one hundred and forty novels.

Daisy Kent receives an anonymous threatening letter on the eve of her engagement, and the next day she is found stabbed to death in a churchyard. Her governess, Anna Denham, is accused of a crime motivated by jealousy. But Anna suddenly disappears, making it extremely difficult to prove her guilt—or innocence. And then there's the mysterious "Red Cross" involved...
Daisy's fiancé, Giles Weir, takes on the task of solving this mystery.
