One elder said: "There are many good and pious priests, but one out of a thousand can properly guide a person's spiritual life - it is a special gift of God." Father Valentine (Mordasov) (1998), the author of the advice and counsel collected in our publication, was just such a confessor. He devoted all his free time from Divine Service to his flock. As an inexhaustible source, people who were suffering, seeking spiritual guidance or simply life advice, reached out to him. Along with complex purely personal questions, parishioners and pilgrims often had questions that could be conditionally entitled: "How to live a Christian life? ", "How to be saved" or "What is good for a believer to know", etc. There were a great number of such questions, and Father Valentine blessed to write down answers to some of the most interesting and necessary of them. Father Valentine rarely said anything of his own accord, all his advice was based on holy theological teaching. Only those questions that had no explanation in church books with the greatest care he solved, relying on his vast spiritual experience and prayer. Characterized by great humanity, Father Valentine did not seek, however, to please anyone but God. He believed that pleasing man often causes one to sin against the Truth. Therefore, do not be embarrassed if some of his advice seems difficult or wrong. Our pride leads us to co-question, that is, to answer a clear answer with a new question. If we go this way, even the most helpful advice becomes useless. It is better to remember that the truth of God is often inconvenient for human weakness and that it is necessary to be able to take the bitter medicine, to see their sinfulness and to move their constant prayerful ascension to God for the dispensation of spiritual discretion give us the opportunity to hope that his advice, most fully presented in this book, will be very useful for many and many believers. Father Valentine's many years of pastoral experience, his realization of the great responsibility for the advice given before God.
