Building a nuclear shelter is expensive, but entirely possible. You settle in, furnish it... And then, some time later, after what everyone feared has happened, you finally emerge from the bunker to the surface, and there... a happy future for Earth: high technology, yet cannibalism; wise discourses on freedom, yet primitive slavery.

This novel about "freedom," written in 1964, is considered by many readers to be the best since the famous "The Outsider" (1961). In any case, it is no less relevant than the latter.

The collection also includes works thematically related to the novel: "The Year of the Jackpot," a novella about an American apocalypse, and the long story "Elsewhere," a story about space-time travel and entry into a parallel world, with rather unexpected consequences.
