The Aprakos is an ancient method of publishing the Gospel text, adapted for liturgical use. Unlike the familiar Four Gospels, in which the Holy Gospel is clearly divided into four books: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the Aprakos is a sequence of readings (in Church Slavonic liturgical terminology, a reading) for each day, in accordance with the liturgical calendar and taking into account two liturgical cycles—movable and fixed. Aprakos were the first Slavic liturgical manuscripts of the Gospel. Later, especially with the spread of printing, they gave way to the Four Gospels—the generally accepted form of publishing the liturgical sacred text to this day.

Long forgotten, the Aprakos can now once again become an alternative, no less convenient and popular form of using the Gospel text in both liturgical and home use, in full accordance with ancient church tradition.

An additional convenience of this edition is that it presents not only the Church Slavonic text used in services in the Russian Orthodox Church, but also, in a parallel column, the Russian Synodal translation.
