Viktor Nikolaevich Yemelyanov (1899–1963), a contributor to the Krug almanac and Alexei Remizov's salon, belonged to the so-called "unnoticed generation" of the first Russian emigration. In Paris in the 1930s, after losing his job at a factory, he began actively writing and created his only completed work, the novella "Jim's Date" (1938). It is a touching story of love, separation, and devotion, told from the perspective of a dog, an Irish setter named Jim. According to Georgy Adamovich, this text "lacks sentimentality and saccharine sentimentality," but "has that inner light that always enlivens all poetry." The publication also includes other works by Yemelyanov that have been discovered to date: "Night on the Bosphorus," an excerpt from a novella about the lives of Russian sailors; the lyrical story "The Possible," and a short but insightful correspondence on literary matters with Mikhail Osorgin. Yemelyanov's writings were highly regarded by his contemporaries, and the publication of this collection is an attempt to revive this now virtually forgotten, yet important, literary legacy.
