The writer Higuchi Ichiyo (1872-1896) died young, from the romantic nineteenth-century disease of consumption, which afflicted many Japanese writers; she was only twenty-four years old. Beginning to write at the age of twenty-one, she soon managed to gain fame as an outstanding master of words. In her works, she brilliantly conveys the hard-to-understand atmosphere of "ukiyo" - "floating world". According to Buddhist beliefs, life is inherently fragile and ephemeral; there is no life without transience, and the world floating away is infinitely sad, which is why every moment is precious. Higuchi Ichiyo died in November 1896. On the day of her death to the house of the deceased was a pilgrimage of admirers of her work from all over Japan. Writers raised funds by subscription - there was nothing to bury her with....
