The Tu-22M supersonic long-range bomber is referred to as the "Eurostrategy", because it allows the Russian Federation to attack any target in Europe, the Eurasian continent and even North Africa. This machine is the basis of our long-range aviation, and its replacement in the next decade is not expected. Tu-22M was one of the most secret aviation projects of the USSR and was intended to combat aircraft carrier strike groups instead of the aging Tu-22K, which revealed an impressive "bouquet" of shortcomings (complexity of piloting, poor visibility from the cockpit pilot, high landing speed, mutual influence of engines located adjacent to each other arc). Despite the similar name Tu-22M, it is a completely different machine, which even from afar it is difficult to confuse with the usual "twenty-second". The bomber received a variable sweep wing, air intakes on the sides of the fuselage and engines in the tail. An important milestone in the development of this aircraft was the appearance in the 1970s modification of the Tu-22M3, which has a number of significant improvements and equipped with more powerful and fuel-efficient engines. In combat situations Tu-22M used in Afghanistan and the First Chechen campaign, in South Ossetia (where one of them was shot down by a missile supplied by the Ukrainians SAM "Buk"), in Syria, where they bombed the positions of terrorists, finally, during the military special operation in Ukraine. The new book by a leading aviation historian in all details tells about the creation, design, production, operation, missile and bomb armament, as well as combat use of the legendary Tu-22M and its modifications.
