The incredible story of a preacher and his young disciple, the Saam boy Jussi. It is the summer of 1852, in a remote village in the very north of Sweden. Jussi has run away from home, where he is starving and suffering from beatings. Soon he is to keep company with the learned man Lestadius, who saved Jussi from starvation, and their duo of teacher and student will form on joint botanical expeditions. The preacher will teach Jussi to recognize plants, to read and write, and to love and fear God. Lestadius brings the word of God to the Sami pagans. But one day his fascination with botany leads the pastor and Jussi down an unexpected path. On a remote farm a maid has disappeared - she has not returned from the forest where she was herding cows. Where she disappeared, bear claw marks are found on the trunks of trees. Everyone is sure that the girl was mauled by a man-eating bear, and only the preacher doubts it. Thus begins the investigation, which is led by Pastor Lestadius and a Sami boy (an unexpected literary reincarnation of the Holmes-Watson pair). The most fascinating detective intrigue is embedded in an equally fascinating historical novel, and all this is presented with a warm, slightly ironic tone. It is interesting that Lars Levi Lestadius is a real historical person, a man who spent his whole life among the Sami and, in fact, converted them to Christianity.
