This book presents the theoretical works of Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935), the founder of one of the central phenomena of the Russian avant-garde—Suprematism—substantiating the legitimacy of this artistic movement in abstract painting and allowing for the extension of these principles to other art forms. At the heart of Suprematism lies the idea of the dominance and superiority of color over all other properties of painting. In his non-objective canvases, paint, according to Kazimir Malevich, was for the first time liberated from its subsidiary role, from serving other purposes. Suprematist paintings became the first step toward "pure creativity," that is, an act that equated the creative power of man and nature. In artistic practice, Suprematism was expressed through combinations of multicolored planes of the simplest geometric outlines (in the geometric forms of the straight line, square, circle, and rectangle). The combination of multi-colored and different-sized geometric figures forms balanced, asymmetrical Suprematist compositions imbued with internal movement.
