The legendary Su-25 made its maiden flight more than a quarter of a century ago, when it was believed that a "direct support aircraft" should be versatile, i.e. capable of equal combat with enemy fighters. And the Su-25 (then still under the T-8 index) was designed for combat use at low altitude, subsonic speed and relatively short distances from the base. But it was the rejection of "universality" that allowed the machine to provide phenomenal survivability, which saved the lives of pilots in seemingly hopeless situations. The history of the Su-25 is inextricably linked with Afghanistan, where a specially formed 200th Independent Attack Aviation Squadron was sent immediately after the completion of state trials. It was during the Afghan war that the nickname "Rook" was assigned to the attack aircraft, and the bird's pattern adorned the nose of the airplane. After the Afghan war, the Su-25 participated in many other conflicts - Iran-Iraq (1980-1988), the Persian Gulf (1991), the Congo (1997-2002), Ethiopia-Eritrea (1998-2000), Macedonia (2001), France-Ivoire (2004), as well as in wars in the former USSR. Now "Rooks" are actively and successfully used during the Special Military Operation in Ukraine.
