Georgy Markov is one of the best-known Soviet writers, and for many years he headed the USSR Writers' Union. A Siberian, the son of a hunter, Markov knew peasant life well. Already the first novel - "Strogovy" (1939-1946) - brought the author fame. Taking as a basis for the story of one family, G. Markov described the events that took place in his native land in the period from the Russo-Japanese to the Civil War. The continuation of this story was the novel "Salt of the Earth" (1954-1960), which traces the fate of the children and grandchildren of Matvey Strogov, engaged in the transformation of post-war Siberia.
