Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) was an American writer and social activist, creator of American Tragedy and The Financier. Ninth child in the family, but three older brothers died. Was forced to drop out of university. Worked as a clerk and laundry van driver. He wrote for "Metropolitan", "Harpers", "Cosmopolitan" magazines. The first novel "Sister Carrie" (1900) puritanically minded public and critics met extremely hostile. In 1944 he received the Gold Medal of Honor for outstanding achievements in art and literature from the "American Academy of Arts and Letters". Actively spoke at rallies, published in the pages of the Communist press in the United States. In 1927 he traveled to the USSR and published the book "Dreiser looks at Russia".
Released after Theodore Dreiser's death, the final novel of the "Trilogy of Desire" was The Stoic. Retirement-age millionaire financier Frank Cowperwood moves his business to London after a collapse in Chicago - and still succeeds, but death has its own plans...
