Few people can easily name more than three women in art history. Certainly, Frida Kahlo, Marina Abramović, and Natalia Goncharova are well known. If we go further, to the pre-20th century, even a seasoned museum-goer will be stunned. Of course, our ignorance of the names of outstanding female artists doesn't mean they didn't exist. Not to mention such significant figures in world art as curators, critics, patrons, collectors, muses, and models. We know nothing about them. And this is understandable.

Art was long considered a male domain, and a patriarchal society, deliberately created through institutional discrimination against women, perpetuated this state of affairs. Women's professional opportunities were severely limited, and we mustn't forget that traditional art history was written by men about men, with an emphasis on revolutionary artists who changed everything.

Professor Noah Charney vividly demonstrates that it was women who shaped art history from the Middle Ages to the present day. History has often been distorted, and it's time to recognize those who deserve far greater recognition.
