Wilfred Trotter (1872-1939) was a talented English surgeon and an outstanding sociologist. Developing Gustave Lebon's ideas in his famous book "The Psychology of Peoples and Masses", he made a real breakthrough in the study of human group behavior and crowd control methods, which are nowadays actively used by political technologists and marketers.Wilfred Trotter's book on "herd instinct" was published almost immediately after the First World War. Observing how the governments of the warring countries resorted to various forms of propaganda and persuasion in an attempt to induce the "mass man" to support the war effort, Trotter developed a theory about the inherent herd instinct of man, following which often contradicts the three basic instincts: survival, food and continuation of the species. Trotter became interested in the phenomenon and tried to understand the mechanisms of the psyche that compel people to obey the leader and the opinion of the majority against their own interests.
