Wilfred Trotter (1872–1939) was a talented English surgeon and eminent sociologist. Developing the ideas of Gustave Le Bon, outlined in his famous book, "The Psychology of Nations and Crowds," he made a real breakthrough in the study of human group behavior and crowd control techniques, which are actively used today by political strategists and marketers.

Wilfred Trotter's book on the "herd instinct" was published almost immediately after the end of World War I. Observing how governments of warring countries resorted to various forms of propaganda and persuasion in an attempt to induce the "mass man" to support the war effort, Trotter developed a theory about the inherent human herd instinct, which often conflicts with three basic instincts: survival, nutrition, and procreation. Trotter became intrigued by this phenomenon and attempted to understand the psychological mechanisms that compel people to obey leaders and the opinions of the majority, contrary to their own interests.
