After the victory at Stalingrad, the Soviet command was in a state of euphoria. The General Staff believed that it was enough to "punch a hole" in the enemy's defenses, into which tank formations would collapse the German front on their own. In the winter and spring of 1943, the Soviet command decided to cut off the Oryol Salient—another bridgehead for an offensive on Moscow that had remained intact since the winter of 1941. According to the Soviet leadership's plan, the 16th Army was to advance through Zhizdra to Bryansk and, through joint efforts with armies from other fronts, defeat all German units in the Oryol Salient and reach the rear of the German Rzhev group. However, despite the courage of the 16th Army's soldiers, the Soviet forces failed to break through the German defenses. Alexander Polischuk's new book examines the Soviet troops' Zhizdrin offensive day by day, revealing both the heroism of Soviet soldiers and the mistakes of command.
