"They became reliable, easy to maintain, proven 'worker bees'" Luftwaffe..." - this is how the creator of the He.111, the outstanding aircraft designer Ernst Heinkel summarized the combat performance of these medium bombers. Having made their debut in the Condor Legion in Spain, by the beginning of World War II the Heinkels had already formed the basis of German bomber aviation and played "first fiddle" in the Blitzkrieg era. They were responsible for the tragedy of Coventry, raids on Leningrad and London, and the defeat of the PQ-17 convoy. Being extremely versatile, the He.111 was used not only as a bomber, but also as a torpedo bomber, long-range reconnaissance aircraft, heavy night fighter, transport aircraft, and missile carrier (flying launcher of Fau-1 cruise missiles). They fought on all fronts - from England to Africa, from the Arctic to the Mediterranean, but most of all on the Eastern Front, where at Moscow, Stalingrad and Kursk Bulge were lost especially many "crooked-faced" (so at the front nicknamed He.111 for the characteristic asymmetric nose of its most mass modification). The last major raid involving "Heinkels" also took place on the territory of the USSR - against the American "Flying Fortresses" in Ukraine. The book by a leading aviation historian examines in detail not only the history of creation, design, modifications (including civilian) He.111, but also traces the entire combat path of one of the most famous aircraft of the Luftwaffe and the entire Second World War. The publication is illustrated with unique projections and photographs.
