The book by art historian Tatiana Akimova introduces the reader to the works of secular art of Western Europe XIII-XV centuries, presenting a huge scale, but little-known material: these are wall paintings and book miniatures, trellises, embroideries, jewelry, household items and costumes - chests, writing plates, mirror cases, combs, fibulae, made of ivory, metal and wood. Artistic monuments, which were so rich in the time of beautiful ladies and noble knights who highly appreciated beauty and luxury, are considered in the thematic diversity in which they once existed in residential interiors: they brought to life, finding their visual embodiment, the heroes of chivalric novels, the plots of Celtic and Germanic legends, poetic allegories of courtesan love. Interpretation of themes and motifs of decorative furnishings of castles and city residences of the nobility will help the reader to better understand the way of life of people of that epoch, their ideas about such important categories of human existence as love, life, death, time, which went beyond the limits of both church and ancient tradition. The richly illustrated edition is addressed to specialists (historians, culturologists, art historians), as well as to a wide range of readers interested in the culture of the Middle Ages.
