The book by the renowned military history specialist Werner Haupt is dedicated to the last days of April 1945, when Soviet troops began the decisive assault on the capital of the Reich. The author describes in detail the battles, operations and fights, the events taking place in individual military units, at command posts and in the Fuhrer's bunker. At the center of the dramatic events is the last military commandant of Berlin, General Helmut Weidling. Surviving letters, eyewitness accounts, minutes of discussions of the situation at the front and other documents allowed the author to better understand the general, who found himself in conflict with his conscience when he had to choose between the concept of unconditional soldier discipline and compassion for people.
