Vera Panova was a Soviet writer and playwright, winner of three Stalin Prizes. Her books have been reprinted dozens of times and have inspired numerous theatrical productions and film adaptations. This collection includes her most famous works, now considered among the golden treasures of Soviet classics. The novella "Companions" (1946), which brought Panova nationwide fame, is dedicated to the military medics who transported the wounded from the front to rear hospitals during the Great Patriotic War. The novella has been adapted for the screen twice: the beloved films "Mercy Train" by Iskander Khamraev and "For the Rest of My Life" by Pyotr Fomenko. Along with "Companions," the collection includes "Sentimental Novel" (1958), as well as the novellas "Clear Shore" (1949) and "Seryozha" (1955)—works linked by common characters that form a unique dilogy. Georgy Danelia and Igor Talankin adapted the novella "Seryozha" into a film of the same name, which won the Crystal Globe, the top prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, in 1960. "You've written a classic book that will sooner or later make you a worldwide name," Korney Chukovsky wrote to Panova after reading "Seryozha," noting the novella's classic elegance and the harmony that connects it to the works of Pushkin and Chekhov.
