Contemporary painting

The book by the American art historian and art critic Suzanne Hudson (b. 1977) is devoted to painting — a medium that occupies a central place in classical Western art, but in today's post-medial world is just one of many equal means of expression.

Analyzing the art of the first two decades of the 21st century, the author takes into account this duality: the painting is considered not only as a man-made image on a flat surface, but also as an instrument for reflection on authorship, the artist's identity, the history and institutional structure of art, an element of installations, conceptual projects and a tool for making statements on topical political issues.

The book focuses on the diversity of art practices using painting: an illustrated review of the work of more than two hundred artists from around the world convincingly proves that the painting — good or "bad", figurative or abstract, material or virtual, original or appropriated — remains an excellent framework or arena for innovative searches in art.
