Soviet Trickster: The Cultural Legacy of Cynicism
29.99 €
Mark Lipovetsky's new book explores popular characters of the Soviet era—from Julio Jurenito and Ostap Bender to Woland, Venichka, and the heroes of Leonid Gaidai's comedies. All of them can be called tricksters—unique counterparts of the Soviet "new man" of the 1920s. The author argues that during the Soviet period, the trickster acquired new significance as an ironic messiah of modernity, polemically contrasting his parodic scenarios with official Soviet projects. The enduring viability of this image was ensured by the culture of Soviet cynicism, which extended both to the strategies of power and to the tactics of conformity and survival. Developing a theoretical concept of this trope and a typology of the Soviet trickster, M. Lipovetsky analyzes the most prominent trickster narratives ranging from the 1920s to the 1980s, from modernism to socialist realism, from popular culture to the underground. The book concludes with observations on the transformations of this cultural model in the post-Soviet era. Mark Lipovetsky, Doctor of Philology, is a professor at Columbia University (USA).
