"The Report of Affairs in Yucatán is a major source on the history and ethnography of the Maya at the time of the Spanish conquest. This text, which is an excerpt from a more complete manuscript that has not survived, contains rich and varied material on ancient Maya life. Despite the controversial figure of the author, the Franciscan missionary Diego de Landa (1523-1579), who not only studied the culture and customs of the Maya but also played a role in the destruction of their heritage, the Report of Affairs in Yucatán preserves unique information about the conquered people, including their written language. The first publication of the source in Russian translation was realized in 1955 by the outstanding scientist Y. V. Knorozov, the founder of the Soviet school of Mayanism and decipherer of Maya writing. The extensive introductory article has not lost its scientific value even almost 70 years after it was written.
