The novel "Dream in the Red Terem", first published in its entirety in 1791, is not just part of the golden treasury of Chinese classical literature (along with the "Three Kingdoms", "River Waters" and "Journey to the West"), - in the style of writing and the principle of plot construction, it is very close to the modern novel and, perhaps, therefore enjoys special sympathy among readers. The book tells the story of the prosperity and ruin of a large wealthy family, recklessly squandered their wealth, which brought it a lot of troubles and hardships. Widespread popularity of the novel brought elegant syllable, fantastic events, love adventures and detailed descriptions of everyday life.
In the present edition, "A Dream in the Red Tower" is printed in the two-volume edition of 1958, but the translations of numerous poems, which form an important part of the novel, are printed in the 1997 edition, for which the translator Lev Nikolayevich Menshikov has revised and corrected his texts anew. The novel is accompanied by original illustrations by Chinese artists.
