Gustave Kahn's novel "The Sun Circus" (1899) is a lost gem of French symbolism. The golden-haired Lorelei from Heinrich Heine's poem is tired of sitting on the rock, on which the boats of sailors enchanted by her sailors crash, and set out to conquer the cities as a star of a traveling circus. She wanders through the cities of Europe accompanied by an entourage of knights in armor, Saracens on Arabian horses, beautiful Italian women and frisky Andaluskas, lions and tigers. And her name is now Sun Princess! In a small town she meets a melancholy Bohemian count, whom the family council wants to disinherit in favor of his younger brother, a jaunty officer of a dragoon regiment. The sunny princess awakens Franz from his years-long slumber, and he leaves his native castle and sets off to wander with a traveling circus.

The novel closely intertwines motifs of medieval legends and Symbolist poetry, and the images of a beautiful lady and a decadent femme fatale come together in the love song of a trouver living in seclusion. The book's circus performance foreshadows the literature of the absurd.
