William Faulkner (1897-1962) was a famous American writer, novelist, poet, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1949). "Soldier's Reward" is his first published novel ( 1926). Donald Magon, a wounded pilot, returns home from the European theater of war to the American countryside. His face is disfigured, he gradually loses his sight and says almost nothing. It is clear to everyone around him that it will be difficult for the young hero to get to his hometown in Georgia without an escort. And the company for him is found: a former soldier Joe Gilligan and a young widow Mrs. Powers undertake to help. And now the lieutenant is home. Magon's father, a priest who thought his son was dead, is mad with joy, but as time passes, it fades, replaced by confusion at how his boy has returned. The bride faints with horror at first meeting him. What comes next? No one can figure out what Donald Magon is thinking in the darkness thickening around him, what he feels, what he hopes for, or how he can be helped - if he can. Is he really still alive...?
