This is the first time a book by diplomat and collector Alexander Alexandrovich Polovtsov (1867–1944) has been published in Russian. Originally published in French in 1919, it is being published in Russian. The son of Senator and Secretary of State A. A. Polovtsov (1832–1909), Polovtsov Jr. was deeply involved in historical matters and was a keen connoisseur of Russian art. He served as director of the Baron A. L. Stieglitz Museum and Art School and as a member of the art commission for the Gatchina Palace. In 1917, he was appointed commissioner for art at Pavlovsk Palace. In his book, Polovtsov describes Petrograd in the post-revolutionary period and recounts how, together with his colleagues, he undertook every effort to preserve works of art in Petrograd and its suburbs.
