The first posthumous collection of M.L. Gasparov's works (in six volumes) aims to convey as fully as possible the multifaceted nature of his scholarly interests and to present the main directions of his activity. Gasparov is first of all famous for his antique studies, although he himself called himself only "temporarily acting as a classical philologist in the narrow interval between those who taught us and those who came very soon after us. He was also much engaged in the Middle Ages, and especially much in translation. The second volume of M.L. Gasparov's collected works presents works on the literature of ancient Rome and on Latin literature of the subsequent period, mainly medieval. They were intended for publications of different profiles and therefore have a multi-genre character: panoramic pictures of large historical and literary periods, subtle portraits of the most prominent ancient Roman poets, and deep analytical analyses of individual works. The two parts of the volume are linked by one of Gasparov's main themes - the history, content, and fate of ancient rhetoric, as well as his interest in poetry from Catullus and Ovid to the medieval Vagantes. In this volume, as in the previous one, M.L. Gasparov's research is accompanied by his artistic translations, the work on which was carried out in parallel with his scientific research.
