This is a novel about the HIV epidemic that engulfed many provinces of China in the early nineties, when the government decided to develop its own blood plasma market and announced a campaign of "donor economy". Many "blood centers" opened all over the country, "blood elders" appeared in the villages.
Seduced by the slogan "Donate blood and get rich", peasants languishing in poverty rushed to donate blood and, due to unsanitary conditions, became infected with HIV en masse. After some time, a deadly wave of the epidemic swept across the country, devastating entire villages.
The book was the result of three years of the author's "undercover" work - having got a job as an assistant to a famous Beijing anthropologist, he got the opportunity to study the history of one of the extinct villages.
