This new edition of The Snow Queen with stunning illustrations by Christian Birmingham is, without exaggeration, the most beautifully illustrated version of Andersen's fairy tale: the book contains 35 illustrations, each of which is a true masterpiece, including 7 huge canvases for a whole spread each. We have taken as a basis the best and most accurate, in our opinion, translation of "The Snow Queen" into Russian, made 120 years ago by the spouses Anna and Peter Ganzen, revised and edited it, bringing it in line with the norms of the modern Russian language. Andersen was a deeply religious man, and all his fairy tales are permeated with sincere faith in God. Andersen's fairy tales published in the USSR (except for the academic two-volume edition of 1969) were subjected to censorship, which removed any hints of Christian symbols, ideas and images. As a result, much in Andersen's fairy tales remained incomprehensible, and sometimes their entire meaning was radically changed. For example, divine miracles disappeared from "The Snow Queen" (devilish ones, however, remained), angels, prayers, psalms and all Christian symbolism; some other fragments of the fairy tale (for example, the revelation of flowers in the third story) were substantially reduced. In our translation all these fragments and details are fully restored. "The Snow Queen" - one of Andersen's best fairy tales, a touching and light story about selfless love that overcomes evil, about faith and devotion, which make even the weakest person resilient, determined and brave in the face of adversity and severe trials, a great reason to talk to a child about eternal values, about the struggle of good and evil in the soul of each of us.
