The publication is dedicated to the artistic tradition of Russian folk embroidery using the example of Smolensk "ukras", as the ornamental decor of clothing and household items was called in the old days. The book presents the landmark work for the study of embroidery by E.N. Kletnova "Symbolism of Folk Ornaments of the Smolensk Region", published in 1924.
For the first time, the publication includes color images of the embroideries mentioned in the work from the collections of the State Historical Museum and the Smolensk State Museum-Reserve. The publication also presents a biographical essay dedicated to the fate and work of E.N. Kletnova, an analysis of the main motifs of geometric embroidery patterns of the peoples of Russia in the 18th - early 20th centuries, as well as material on how Smolensk "ukras" are used in modern embroidery.
The book is richly illustrated, some of the images of the embroideries are published for the first time.
