Thomas Mayne Reid (1818-1883) has been well known to Russian readers for at least a century and a half. In his homeland, England, interest in him died down for a while, but flared up with renewed vigor in the 21st century, not least thanks to his Russian translations: Chekhov mentions him favorably, Nobel Prize winner Czeslaw Milosz learned Russian from our editions of Mayne Reid, and the young Vladimir Nabokov translated him himself, in verse. It is also important that at the beginning of his creative path, Mayne Reid had a decisive influence on the work of A. Conan Doyle.

Dangers lurk at every step for a caravan of carts of Dutch peasant settlers in search of land to establish a settlement in Africa. These include lions, crocodiles, tsetse flies, and, of course, tropical heat. This is the plot of the story "The Road to Transvaal".

What does it mean to find a living head on the Texas prairie? The answer to this question is given in the famous and undeservedly forgotten novel "The Killing Shot" by "The Great Captain".
