Thomas Mann was a distinguished German writer, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1929), and author of the novels "Buddenbrooks," "The Magic Mountain," and the tetralogy "Joseph and His Brothers." This collection includes Thomas Mann's famous short stories, small masterpieces including "Death in Venice," considered one of the author's oeuvre's crowning achievements. Gustav Aschenbach, a distinguished German writer, arrives at a seaside resort near Venice in search of relaxation. His entire life is devoted to writing, which for Aschenbach is a kind of barracks where order and self-discipline reign. At the resort, he meets a Polish youth, Tadzio, endowed with an antique, almost mythological beauty, sensual and spiritual, reflecting the dark, destructive, yet alluring depths of the human soul. An encounter with Tadzio, a harbinger of death in cholera-infested Venice, proves fatal for Aschenbach. The novella was written in 1911. According to the author, its concept was significantly influenced by news of the death of the great Gustav Mahler, whose name the author gave to his hero. Death in Venice later formed the basis for Luchino Visconti's famous film of the same name.
