"Death in Persia" - unfinished, published posthumously, a novel by the Swiss writer, journalist and photographer, one of the eccentric stars of the "Weimar era" Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942). The narrative is unorthodox, in some places surreal, spiced with fever and opium intoxication - to match the personality of Schwarzenbach herself. The author immerses the reader in her experiences of loneliness and hopelessness, doomed love and departure from World War II-ravaged Europe, while simultaneously describing a journey through the enchanting expanse of Persia that so captivates her. As she wanders through a foreign land in search of her place in a world that does not accept her "otherness," Schwarzenbach is constantly thinking about death, which, like the heroine of this book, follows her relentlessly on her heels.
