Mikhail Alekseevich Kuzmin's dramatic masterpiece, "The Death of Nero" (1929), is hardly known to readers. Among the narrow circles of Russian modernist enthusiasts, it has earned a reputation as a captivating yet enigmatic statement, as Kuzmin resorts to Aesopian language in his depictions of Nero and his "double," the Russian writer Pavel Lukin.
This edition pursues several goals, primarily to introduce the reader to this forgotten masterpiece. One interpretation of "The Death of Nero" is offered by artist Tatyana Svirina, and another, in the form of an academic commentary, is offered by philologist Lada Panova.
The book is intended for anyone interested in Kuzmin's work, Russian modernism, early Soviet literature, and largely forgotten but still relevant drama.
