Death of an Empire: American Ambassador on the Collapse of the USSR

Jack Matlock was the U.S. Ambassador to the USSR from 1987 to 1991. He met many times with Mikhail Gorbachev and knew his associates and enemies well. In June 1991, Matlock warned Gorbachev about a plot against him, but was not heard. In his book, Matlock explains how the collapse of the Soviet empire occurred, the key events that led to it, and who bears primary responsibility for it. Since the book was written when Matlock had already left government service and the collapse of the USSR was a fait accompli, the author speaks candidly about many details of these events that were unknown to the general public.
