Laughter simultaneously contains both destructive and creative principles. On the one hand, it returns the world to its original chaos, destroying the symbolic system of culture; on the other, it creates a world opposite to the culture being ridiculed—a world free from conventions and social norms. In their outstanding work, "Laughter in Ancient Rus'," D.S. Likhachev and A.M. Panchenko explore the specifics of ancient Russian humorous culture: they examine the democratic nature of laughter, analyze the complex phenomenon of foolishness for Christ's sake, and identify the individual humorous characteristics of Ivan the Terrible and Archpriest Avvakum.

This edition is supplemented by an appendix in which participants in the folklore seminar of the Philological Faculty of St. Petersburg State University, "Fundamentals of Traditional Text Analysis," led by I. S. Veselova, comment on comic folklore with its humor, not always understandable to the modern reader, and sometimes quite harsh satire on the social reality of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
