A sad tale for high school age.
The first two novels of the "Rat Trilogy," the writer's famous series that concludes with "The Sheep Hunt" and continues with "Dance, Dance, Dance." The story began on August 8, 1970 and ended eighteen days later - that is, on August 26 of that year. The whole story lasts nineteen full days the hero narrator assures us, but not the author. If you count carefully, you'll see that the story doesn't fit into nineteen days. Would you believe it or would you check it? "Over the summer, Rat and I drank a twenty-five-foot pool of beer and covered the floor of J's Bar with a five-inch layer of peanut husks. If we hadn't done that, we just wouldn't have survived, it was such a boring summer." Everything that is near and dear to the protagonist comes to an end. It is lost, dies and passes into another world. The main question is how to relate to all this? "Pinball" begins in September 1973. That's the entrance. But the main thing is to understand where the exit is. There has to be an exit. There has to be.
