"A Sermon on the Apocalypse" is the major work of the Russian religious figure and one of the organizers of the Religious and Philosophical Assemblies of 1901–1903, the thinker Valentin Aleksandrovich Ternavtsev (1866–1940). Ternavtsev's book is consonant with the book of the Apostle John the Theologian; the author subtly senses the apostle's spiritual makeup, scrutinizing his disposition and personality. Ternavtsev's work is distinguished by its sincerity and thoughtful, one might even say loving, examination of the image of John the Theologian and his visions. Ternavtsev follows the apostle, neither attempting to take literally the grotesque images of his book (such as locusts with human heads) nor focusing on images of evil. He is not interested in the mysterious numerology of the number of the beast or the image of the harlot sitting on many waters. It focuses on the "prologue in Heaven," the image of Christ Himself, the angels, and the heavenly forces of good. Since Ternavtsev adhered to chiliasm, believing in the coming victory of good not only in the afterlife but also in this earthly reality, he paid close attention to the Apocalypse's promises of a thousand-year reign of the saints on earth with Christ.
This book is being published for the first time and is addressed to philosophers, theologians, and interested, erudite readers.
