The Monk Simeon the New Theologian (949-1022), is named by Church Tradition as the Theologian on a par with two other glorified saints, the Apostle John the Theologian and St. Gregory the Theologian. This high honor is due to St. Simeon, among other things, for the revelation to him by the grace of God of the mysteries of the Most Holy Trinity, and for the special contemplative spirit of his works. The main subject of St. Simeon's instructions is the hidden work in Christ. He explains the ways of inner struggle, teaches measures of perfection, and makes us strive mainly against spiritual passions, against sinful thoughts and movements. The Monk Simeon speaks about it as only a man who has studied the moral life by experience, and not for a year, but for decades, can speak about it. For him, Christian faith presupposes a personal experience of communion with God. The writings of the Reverend are a rich treasury of thoughts about the spiritual life, with a power to act on the soul that thirsts for piety.
