A wooden idol of the Arumbaya tribe is stolen from the Ethnographic Museum. However, the next day the statue is found in its rightful place. Tintin has no doubt - a fake has been returned to the museum. The original ear was missing a small fragment, but the returned god has a whole ear. In pursuit of the stolen statue, Tintin boards a steamship that sails to South America. A couple of gangsters who are after the statue trick him into coming ashore, and Tintin finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of revolutionary events.
