"Plum Love Calendar" - an outstanding work of traditional Japanese prose and one of the best examples in the genre of ninjobon, "tale of feelings". Tamenaga Shunsui (pseudonym of the Japanese novelist Sasaki Sadataki) created twelve "scrolls" - according to the number of months - stories about life in the capital Edo, famous, among other things, for its quarter Yoshiwara, which offered entertainment for both refined and undemanding tastes. High lords and commoners, top-ranking geisha and ordinary women - they are all united by a love that recognizes no boundaries and every spring awakens with new vigor, blossoming with the first plum blossoms. The success of ninjobon became one of the reasons for persecution by the Japanese authorities, irritated by the popularity of books that did not carry the proper ideological load. In 1842, writers, publishers, and artists were even prosecuted and subjected to penalties and fines, and books and printing boards were burned en masse. Tamenaga Shunsui was among those who suffered particularly severe repression and died soon afterward, unable to bear the shock. It was not until the middle of the century that writers in Japan were able to revisit forbidden themes and revitalize light genres, including ninjobon. The book is decorated with traditional Japanese prints that adorned the original 1833 edition.
