Henry Hill was a gangster. He was a con man. He schemed and plotted and broke heads. He knew how to bribe and he knew how to screw a sucker. He worked full-time in the mob as a racketeer and enforcer, a rara avis, that rare bird that social anthropologists and cops alike would love to study. On the street, he and his friends called themselves "the smart guys." I think his story offers a unique insight into the life of an organized crime foot soldier, a life that is usually described either by outsiders or by the capo di tutti capi, the mob bosses.
