Tears are a universal theme for all world cultures, but attitudes towards them can vary. The manifestation of emotions depends on historical and social circumstances, is expressed and evaluated in the interplay of many factors of individual and collective experience - tradition, ideology, boundaries of coercion and freedom. The authors of Through Tears - including Konstantin Bogdanov, Ilya Vinitsky, Svetlana Adonyeva, Oleg Lekmanov, and others - attempt to answer several important questions about Russian emotional culture. How specific is it in its historical and social transformations? In what does its "tearfulness" manifest itself? And what does this knowledge give us - in retrospective assessment of the past, in concerns about the present and hopes for the future?
The collection is based on the materials of the conference held in November 2022 at the IRLI (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the support of the New Literary Review publishing house.
