The not-too-distant future. Medicine has advanced to the point where doctors can remove any genetic defects and hereditary diseases immediately at a person's birth. But, unfortunately, there is a whole generation of people who came into existence before the advent of this therapy. Society teaches them to get along with the rest of the healthy world through various programs, but it can't make them normal. Up to a certain point.
Lou Arrendale is a representative of this lost generation. He leads a quiet and independent life, not counting annual visits to a psychologist, has a stable job in a pharmaceutical company, has learned to look the interlocutor in the eye, knows how to take into account polite conventions in conversations and does his best to be as normal as possible and not to attract attention. But now his quiet life is being jeopardized. A new experimental treatment emerges to cure an adult of autism spectrum disorders. After it, Lou will be just like everyone else around him. But Lou wonders - if he gets rid of his autism, will he still be himself? Will he still love classical music?
