High-ranking samurai Takebe Ayatari (1719–1774) and the adopted son of a merchant family, Ueda Akinari (1734–1809), shared a relationship during their lifetimes as a teacher and talented student, sometimes bordering on rivalry. In the history of Japanese literature, their names stand alongside each other as pioneers of the new genre of narrative fiction—yomihon.

Akinari's collection "Tales of Spring Rain" includes historical, fantastical, and adventure stories, while Ayatari's "Tale of the Western Mountains" is a story of love and samurai duty, based on the true events of a bloody drama that unfolded in a village near Kyoto.

The publication is adorned with drawings by Takebe Ayatari, a talented artist.
