Charles Perrault was a versatile and prolific writer. He entered art history largely thanks to his work "Parallels Between Ancients and Moderns," in which the writer criticized the tendency of his contemporaries to imitate antiquity: Perrault claimed that the "moderns" had already surpassed the "ancients." His viewpoint generated much controversy, but Perrault continued to defend it steadfastly. The writing of fairy tales was frowned upon among the writer's contemporaries. Cultural figures of the 17th century considered fairy tales to be a low genre. Perhaps this is why Perrault, who moved in scholarly circles and held a prominent position at court, published his first fairy tales under the name of his son, Pierre Darmancourt. However, despite his diverse achievements, today readers know Charles Perrault primarily as the author of the beloved childhood stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and many other fairy tale characters. This edition presents Perrault's fairy tales in poetry and prose. The texts are accompanied by extensive commentary explaining the historical and cultural context of the tales, as well as detailed, expressive illustrations by French artists of past centuries.
