"Tales of Ancient Japan" is the key to the cultural code of the Land of the Rising Sun. Dozens of generations of Japanese have read this collection of tales by Sazzanami Sanjin. Now echoes of this book can be found in the cartoons of Hayao Miyazaki, in anime, in the works of Haruki Murakami, Kobo Abe and other writers.
Sadzanami captured Japan itself - its history, mythology, everyday life and beliefs - in recorded tales. There is a legendary-historical tale about the hero Momotaro, who was born from a large peach and at a young age defeated a whole horde of evil devils. There is a religious and ethical tale of the cunning and cruel Tanuki, who was avenged by Hare for the death of his old lady neighbor. There is also a mythical tale about a descendant of the heavenly gods who went down to the bottom of the sea to the kingdom of the Dragon in search of a missing fishing hook. The collection of tales is preceded by an article by orientalist Vasily Mendrin about the culture and development of Japan. The tales themselves are illustrated by Japanese artist Kobayashi Eitaku.
