Annie (Anna Maria) Keery (1825-1879) was an English children's author and poet. Her collection of Scandinavian myths and legends was first published in 1857. It is a retelling that allows young readers to familiarize themselves with famous Scandinavian stories about majestic gods, brave heroes and creepy monsters. The translation of these texts into Russian in this edition is done by D. V. Mochnev. The book is decorated with lively and colorful drawings by the English book illustrator Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938).
Annie (Anna Maria) Keery (1825-1879) was an English novelist and poetess who wrote mostly for children. Annie was born in a Yorkshire village to William Keery, an Irish-born military chaplain, and his wife Lucy Plummer. The girl was in poor health and was therefore educated at home. Her father spent a lot of time with her and often told her stories about Ireland; these stories Annie reflected in her short stories as she grew up. Kyrie's writing was also influenced by her close association with her nephews: one of Annie's brothers was widowed early, so the girl helped raise his three children for six years until he remarried. Annie began writing for children, and her first book was published in 1856. She wrote many of her compositions with her younger sister Eliza Keery. In a memoir released after Annie's death, Eliza recounted the travels the sisters undertook to find material for their works. Among the books that required laborious work was also a collection of Scandinavian myths and legends published in 1857, Annie's third publication. The texts in this collection are retellings of common works of Scandinavian folklore, which Annie adapted for young readers. Exciting stories about gods, giants, fateful accidents and the struggle between good and evil will, however, be of interest to adults as well. Such myths and legends are included in this edition. On its pages the reader will meet the thunderer Thor and the cunning Loki, the brave Baldr and the beautiful Freya, as well as many other extraordinary creatures. The texts of myths and legends are preceded by an introduction explaining some aspects of the worldview of the ancient Scandinavians. At the end of the collection there is an index explaining the meanings of the names mentioned in the myths. The edition is adorned with vividly detailed drawings by Charles Brock.
Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) was an English book illustrator. Charles was born in London; he was the eldest among four artist brothers. Charles received his first commission to illustrate a book at the age of twenty and soon became a renowned master book illustrator. He did illustrations for the works of authors such as Jane Austen, William Thackeray, Jonathan Swift and George Eliot. His illustrations of Scandinavian myths perfectly convey their dynamism and drama, and the fantastical creatures are depicted as authentically as if the artist had once seen them in person.
